Weather Warning: It’s a buyer's market!

Why wait until spring to purchase your next home when winter is where it’s at? Our mortgage lenders agree that NOW (specifically winter) is the perfect time to buy a house. “Existing home inventory is usually at its lowest in the cold and snowy parts of winter, which makes for a buyer’s market,” Premier Bank mortgage lender, Guthrie Steen says.

Most of the time, people selling homes in the winter may be experiencing job relocations or other immediate reasons. “Spring-time is great for sellers, but winter provides a few more advantages for buyers,” Steen adds. Here are five other reasons why winter is the BEST time to buy that next home:

  1. Sellers are motivated – generally speaking, many sellers who choose to sell their home in the winter could be selling it due to a change in employment or other immediate reasons. Because of this, sellers may be more motivated to sell and have a little bit of wiggle room on their price or even be more flexible on a closing date.
  2. Not as many buyers – Since the weather is so cold, most people are not willing to trudge through snow to tour a home or attend an open house. So that means, you won’t have to deal with the competition to get into a showing or be part of a bidding war.
  3. Less offers are made – Speaking of bidding wars, since there are less buyers out and about, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get more house for your budget.
  4. Get a little extra attention from Realtors – less buyers + less sellers = more attention from your agent. We love it when math goes in your favor, don’t you?
  5. Seeing the house at its worse – there’s not a lot of curb appeal to a front yard of landscaping buried in snow piles. If you like the house without all the fancy curb appeal, chances are you’ll love it all the more when the flowers start to bloom.
Based on these five reasons, what are you waiting for?  If you’re thinking about taking advantage of this great “buyers season” or not quite sure what type of home you qualify for, contact Guthrie at gsteen@premierbankne.com or 402.715.4698. He’ll be in your corner throughout the whole process.
